Wednesday 24 October - Grant McLennan Cup - 1st Leg
Westfield - 2 (0) - Epsom & Ewell - 2 (1) - Loving, Newman
'Field showed their battling spirit as they came from behind twice to draw the opening leg of this cup tie.
In a first half dominated by the midfields and defences, Epsom & Ewell took the lead following a delightful pass inside the 'Field fullback for the left winger to stroke home from the edge of the box. And it didn't help 'Field's cause that Tom Sanders had to be taken from the field on a stretcher with a suspected broken ankle following an awful tackle!
'Field's 'keeper Dan Hatton came to the rescue with a brilliant finger-tip save just before the break.
'Field pressed for the equaliser in the second half and Bo Hirzoau could have scored on fifty-five minutes but screwed his shot wide. But with ten minutes left, 'Field found the net - rather fortunately! A great ball forward by Dan Newman freed Hirzoau on goal but his shot across the 'keeper was going wide until Charlie Loving raced in to lash home.
Before the ninety minutes were up both teams were reduced to ten men. First Nathan Woodward was dismissed for Westfield and then an E&E player was shown red - both presumably for something said!
Epsom took the lead a minute from full time. A free kick from the edge of the box deflected off the wall and past Hatton.
But 'Field wouldn't give it up, and in the seventh minute of added time (ten minutes were added!) Dan Newman scored 'Field's second following a corner by Hirzoau.
Wednesday 10 October - League Cup
Westfield - 3 (2) - Sandhurst Town - 4 (0) - Sanders (2), Loving
Westfield threw away a 2 - 0 half-time lead to end up on the wrong end of a seven goal thriller!
Sandhurst should have opened the scoring in the first fifteen seconds! With half the 'Field defence still mentally in the changing room, a through ball found Sandhurst's centre forward with a free run at goal. He attempted to take the ball round 'keeper Dan Hutton, went down under the challenge and the danger was cleared. Later in the game the ref may have pointed to the spot for a similar "collision"!
Sandhurst dominated the early part of the match, restricting 'Field to the occasional forward foray, but the 'Field defensive towers of Charlie Newman and Dan Curtis prevented Sandhurst from getting in any real chances.
Westfied then scored two goals in just over a minute to shock the visitors. Good play in midfield by Clayton Pummell saw him pass the ball forward to Charlie Loving who moved it on to Tom Sanders to deftly lob over the 'keeper and into the goal. And almost immediately after the restart Pummell released Sanders in the inside-left channel and his low shot from just inside the box found the net.
Sanders should have increased the lead just before the break. He broke the offside trap and again tried to chip the 'keeper but this time the ball went over the bar. Just as he played the ball he was taken out by a Sandhurst defender, but again the ref waved away the penalty appeals.
Within fifteen minutes of the second-half Sandhurst were in the lead! After two minutes a free-kick from the edge of the box went under the wall and off Hutton into the goal. Ten minutes later a high ball into the 6-yard box was palmed away by Hutton and the Sandhurst forward lashed home and then just three minutes later Hutton punched the ball out only for it to come screaming back over his head and into the net. From 2 - 0 to 2 - 3 in no time!
Not content with taking the lead, just four minutes later and Sandhurst scored their fourth! A long shot was blocked by Hutton, but the ball rebounded off him and was lashed home.
'Field responded well to this stunning turnaround and went looking to get back into the game. Pushing Curtis and Newman forward for set plays caused the Sandhurst defence problems and on seventy-nine minutes a good free-kick was curled into the Sandhurst box but cleared for a corner. The ball was swung in from the corner for Curtis' header to be cleared off the line but Loving was following up to hammer the ball high into the net.
'Field continued to press and had a good goal disallowed for offside with just five minutes remaining.
A good battling performance, but that twenty minute crazy spell after the break sealed 'Field's fate.
